Misusing Power with Spy Cams

By: John Rouque

Who does not want to be Big Brother? To be the all-seeing, controlling god of all? Well, possibly not "domineering god of all" but being the all-seeing individual will be just as powerful, don't you believe so? That could be one reason why there are several concerns with regards to using hidden spy cameras, assault of privacy being one of these. Power is always something that everyone abhors and, ironically, everybody likes. Spy cams, while they're an advantage to a certain person, may be so harmful to the other. They could be an important tool or something that will pull you down.

There is this one situation involving a teacher who made use of a hidden camera cloaked as a button to videotape naughty students in school. The students as well as their families have filed complaints against the said teacher for "abusing her authority" and filming the students without their consent. Yes, it was illegal for the teacher to do such, yet if we look at it the other way, we may notice that what the teacher was actually doing was exposing these behavioral concerns to the public so that they may be addressed accordingly. I'm pretty sure that the Virginia Tech accident is still fresh on everyone's minds. Such behavioral propensities could have been noticed beforehand and consequently stopped the incident from occurring. If a covert spy camera is what it entails to prevent such tragic episodes, then I won't mind teachers filming their students at school in any way.

However, there are also a few who abuse the advantages of hidden video cameras. I will suppose all are aware of concerns of outrageous behavior caught on tape that are being utilized to blackmail an individual. Or those that blatantly invades someone's privacy as in putting covert cameras in areas where surveillance is not important, i.e. the restroom or personal quarters for reasons of personal satisfaction or malicious intent. Stalking using spy video cams is also another mode of abuse of this technology.

Yet there's one thing that shocks me. Some homeowners utilize nanny cameras to check their baby-sitters and house maids while they're away. And these nannies are not conscious of the existence of the spy camera until they get caught doing some hanky-panky and dealt with about it. Yet no one seems to be whining. When they get caught abusing a kid or doing something inappropriate, the issue of the nanny's right to privacy is never raised. It's because the owners have the power to do whatever they want to secure the family and the nanny did something incorrect.

Thus, when is the use of hidden surveillance cameras right and when is it not? Seemingly, the thin red line dividing them is much thinner than we thought. When the individual using the surveillance camera is in power, its use is justified. However, if resorting to use hidden spy cams would make us safer, then I am for it. Furthermore, why will I worry about it when I'm not doing anything that is against the law or is morally incorrect? Yet just as long as they maintain well behind the line, it won't be an issue.
